The Magnetic Media Challenge: Preservation of Audio Tape & Videotape
in Libraries and Archives The Queen Mary, Long Beach, California
April 29?30, 1994

The Institute will introduce the concepts and techniques of
preserving magnetic media. Expected attendees will be librarians,
archivists, and other custodians of collections containing audio tape
and videotape who are mindful of the need to preserve these media
either as archival materials or as items for access and use. The
Institute is a based upon one offered in May 1993 at Georgia State
University.

Goals and Objectives: Participants will gain an understanding of the
history of audio and videotape recording technology; the physical
characteristics and life expectancy of magnetic tape; proper storage
and handling techniques; the challenges of recording aging tape for
preservation purposes; administrative and management issues;
balancing the need for preservation against access; the unique role
that magnetic tape serves as a source for scholarly and research
information. Breakout sessions will be interspersed throughout the
two-day Institute to foster further discussion and to provide a forum
for sharing information among participants.
Attendees will be notified of recommended readings in advance of the
Institute.

Location: The program will be held on The Queen Mary. This
magnificent ocean liner made her maiden voyage in 1936 and is now
permanently berthed at 1126 Queen's Highway in Long Beach,
California, after 1001 trans-Atlantic crossings. The ship, which is
included on The National Register of Historic Places, offers several
restaurants ranging from formal to informal, shops, and tours.
The program will be held on The Queen Mary, located at Long Beach,
California.
