Refurbishing leather

Currently is there any consensus among conservators concerning
refurbishing leather bound volumes?  Is there a preferred method for
this procedure?  Haven't leather preservatives such as potassium lactate
fallen into disfavor?  Any citations for recent literature pertaining to
refurbishing would be quite helpful.  Thank you.
