A death

Carolyn Hixson Harris, Director of Preservation and Conservation
Studies, in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, The
University of Texas at Austin, died Saturday, January 15, 1994.  Ms
Harris was a pioneer in the field of conservation and preservation of
library and archival material.

>From 1992-1994, Professor Harris was the Director and Senior Lecturer of
the Preservation and Conservation Studies at the Graduate School of
Library and Information Science of The University of Texas at Austin.
Prior to taking this position, Ms Harris had been Director of the
Preservation and Conservation Education Programs at Columbia
University's School of Library Service.  She was head of the
Preservation Department from 1981-1987 at Columbia University Libraries
and Manuscript Cataloger at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center
at The University of Texas at Austin from 1973-1980.

Ms Harris received her B.A. degree in Art History in 1969 and her
Masters of Library Science in 1970 from The University of Texas at
Austin. Ms Harris held numerous offices and committee appointments.  She
was President of the Resources and Technical Services Division, American
Library Association, 1988-1989.  Author of numerous articles in the
field of preservation and conservation, Harris won the John Brubaker
Award from the Catholic Library Association in 1983 and The Rex Dillow
Award in 1990. Survivors include her parents, Dr. Elmer and Betty
Hixson; siblings, Irene Roderick and husband Rick, Jim Hixson and wife,
Lili Yamasaki, Kathryn Hixson, Joanne Hixson and husband, Peter
Mazurczyk; and her nephews, Marshall Travis, Taylor and Max Roderick. No
formal service will be held.
