Course on disaster preparedness

From: Lorraine Olley <olley>
Date: Monday, January 10, 1994
This July, Indiana University's Division of Continuing Studies and
School of Library and Information Science will sponsor a week-long
course on coping with disasters, "Disaster Preparedness and Recovery for
Library and Archive Collections." The course will be taught using the
facilities of the Conservation Unit in the IU Libraries Preservation

Scheduled for July 24-29, the course will offer participants the
opportunity to become familiar with the tools and skills necessary to
cope with disasters affecting their collections. The course will focus
on management issues such as assessing needs, mobilizing and
coordinating staff efforts, prioritizing and decision making, and
developing strategic and contingency plans. A mock disaster will give
participants the opportunity to salvage water-damaged materials and to
perform follow-up treatments. Participants will draft disaster
preparedness and response plans for their home institutions.

Disaster Preparedness and Recovery is intended for librarians and
archivists from small libraries, archives and historical societies in
locations where expertise and resources are not readily available. Upon
completion of the course, participants will be in a position to train
staff and direct salvage operations at their own institutions.

The course will be taught by Lorraine Olley, head of the IU Libraries
preservation department, and Jo Burgess, head of the collections
conservation section of the preservation department. Olley is directly
involved in planning disaster response and salvage of damaged materials,
as well as lecturing and publishing on this topic. Burgess is
responsible for supervising staff response to water emergencies in the
IU Libraries and the salvage of damaged materials as well as training
staff and students in conservation techniques.

Tuition for the course is $395 and includes all instructional materials,
refreshment breaks and an opening reception. Housing, parking and meals
are not included in the tuition. Enrollment is limited, and early
registration is recommended. The registration deadline is July 1, 1994.
