Magnetic tape deterioration

In re Jan Lyall's query, Leslie Smith's paper, "Factors Governing the
Long-term Stability of Polyester-based Recording Media" [Restaurator
12:201-218, 1991] explores the issues of tape degradation and the
contribution of moisture in some detail.  I assume there is substantial
additional unpublished data in the US National Archives/National
Institute of Standards and Technology files.
