Resource packet on preservation of Government Documents

From: Walter Henry <whenry>

The following appeared in Archives and is reposted here without the
knowledge or consent of the authors. I don't know what GODORT and MAGERT
are (ALA Government Document Round Table? Maps and Geology Round
Table?). Does anyone have a glossary of ALA acronyms?

The RBMS/GODORT/MAGERT Joint Committee on Government Documents as Rare
Books compiled, published, and distributed the preservation packet,
RARE AND VALUABLE GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS: A RESOURCE PACKET ON
IDENTIFICATION, PRESERVATION, AND SECURITY ISSUES FOR GOVERNMENT
  DOCUMENTS COLLECTIONS.

One copy of the preservation packet was distributed to each of the
1,400+ U.S. Government Printing Office Federal Depository Libraries in
May 1993. Since the distribution of the packet, two additional
processes have taken place that improve access and increase
  dissemination of the packet.

The first item concerns the cataloging and classification of RARE AND
VALUABLE GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS in the OCLC database. This was done on
June 5, 1993, by the staff of the North Dakota State Library. The
OCLC # is: 28224706. A special thanks the Catalog Department at the
North Dakota State Library. The Joint Committee appreciates you work.

The second item concerns the availability of RARE AND VALUABLE
GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS through the ERIC Document Reproduction Service
(EDRS). The preservation packet was submitted to EDRS and was
accepted for inclusion in the ERIC database. That took place last
spring. It has now been indexed and abstracted. It appears in the
October 1993 issue of RESOURCES IN EDUCATION and can be found under
the following ERIC abstract number": ED 357 746

Unlike the copy that was distributed to depository libraries (which
  was in a reduced format--2 8 1/2 x 11 inch pages reduced to one 8 1/2
x 11 inch page), the ERIC version is full size edition. People
wishing to purchase copies, can contact ERIC directly (ERDS, 7420
Fullerton Rd., Suite 110, Springfield, VA 22153-2852; 1-800-443-3742).
