LC Preservation Directorate

From: Merrily Smith <nppo>
Date: Friday, August 6, 1993
The retirement at the end of August of Library of Congress Preservation
Projects Officer Gerald Garvey comes at a highly critical stage in the
development of the Library's deacidification program and leaves a
management gap that must be filled from current resources.

Consequently, beginning August 9, 1993, Kenneth E. Harris will devote
his full time to directing the deacidification program and Diane Nester
Kresh will assume full responsibility for administration of the
Preservation Directorate, including supervision of the division chiefs.
These assignments will remain in effect at least through the Library's
next Congressional appropriations hearings (Spring 1994), at which the
deacidification program is expected to be a major topic of attention.

The Library's Management Team considers it imperative that the DEZ test
phase be brought to successful closure. Equally imperative is that the
Library's diminished resources be used effectively to support the
Library's multi-faceted, on-going preservation programs. The Library is
fortunate to have Harris and Kresh, respectively, to deal with these
major assignments.
