Food and drink in the library

From: Paula De Stefano <destefan>

In response to Janet Gertz's query on food and drink in the library...
Since the beginning of the year, a task force in the Bobst Library,
here, at NYU, has been grappling with the issue of food and drink in the
library. Comprised of primarily public service librarians, and myself,
this group elected to educate and inform food and drink offenders
(through signage, bookmarks and other publicity) of the consequences of
food and drink in the library and thereby change their behavior. The
plan was to mount this very visible campaign against eating and drinking
in the library and wait a few months to see if these offenders "got it"
and, surely, the problem would decline...

It's been 6 months and the problem is as bad as ever. My colleagues on
the task force now understand that education alone doesn't do the trick,
some kind of an enforcement has to be implemented along with a "no
eating, no drinking in the library" policy. The task force is now
grappling with an acceptable enforcement policy that the library will
support. So far, nothing worth mentioning has been found acceptable.
