Biodeterioration and Insect Pest Control in Collections
September 27 - October 1, 1993
Texas Memorial Museum, University of Texas at Austin

This 5-day course will be taught by R.E. Child, Head of Conservation,
National Museum of Wales, and sponsored by Texas Memorial Museum, The
University of Texas at Austin. Course fees are $200.00. To meet some
needs of local students who cannot afford the course, we will be
offering a free short afternoon discussion session with Mr. Child on
Tuesday, September 28.

This is the first in a series of professional development courses
offered by Texas Memorial Museum in association with the International
Academic Project program based in London.

The aims of the course are to provide practical information on knowledge
of the biological agents that attack museum and library collections;
assessment of hazards to collections; inspection and monitoring
strategies for early detection and elimination of pests; integrated
preventive measures including environmental control and good
housekeeping to prevent infestations; specific and effective control
measures which minimize toxic exposures and which are ethical for use on
historic materials.

The course is planned for the needs of museum and library collection
professionals from all disciplines. Practical identification sessions
and literature are provided. There will be opportunities for case
studies and group discussions of common problems.

The lecturer, R.E. Child, is Head of Conservation, National Museum of
Wales. He is an Advisor on pest control to The National Trust (U.K.); a
visiting lecturer on pest control and environmental control, ICCROM
Scientific Principles course and Paper Conservation course, Rome, and
has lectured on biodeterioration worldwide, including Rome, Sri Lanka,
