Conference on photographs, scrapbooks, and albums

On Wednesday, May 12, 1993, the AMIGOS Preservation Service will sponsor
a full-day preconference: "Preservation of Photographic Collections,
Scrapbooks, and Albums: Facing Your Worst Nightmare." The session will
be held in conjunction with the May 12-14 AMIGOS Spring 1993 Membership
Conference at the Harvey Hotel-Addison in Dallas, Texas. Featured
speakers Debbie Hess Norris and Sherelyn Ogden, nationally-recognized
preservation experts, will address the specific preservation problems of
photographs, scrapbooks, and albums, which are among the most difficult
media to care for and repair.

Norris, Associate Director of the University of Delaware/Winterthur
Museum Art Conservation Program and Assistant Professor with the
University of Delaware Art Conservation Department, is a
widely-published author and popular speaker on preservation planning for
and the conservation of photographic collections. She was awarded Fellow
status in the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and
Artistic Works (AIC) in 1989. In 1992, she was appointed to the Research
Libraries Group (RLG) Task Force on Photographic Preservation.

Ogden has been Director of Book Conservation at the Northeast Document
Conservation Center (NEDCC) in Andover, Massachusetts, since 1979. A
former Conservator at the Newberry Library, Ogden has been a lecturer in
Conservation Management for Libraries and Archives at the Graduate
School of Library and Information Science, Simmons College, Boston,
Massachusetts, since 1981. She is a Fellow of both the International and
American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. A
prolific author on conservation, Ogden recently served as editor of
NEDCC's Preservation of Library and Archival Materials: A Manual.

Library, archives, and historical society staff are encouraged to attend
the preconference. The workshop will focus on identification of
photograph types, causes of deterioration of photographs and scrapbooks,
methods for care and preservation of these media, and resources in the
Southwest for photograph and scrapbook preservation. In addition, Ogden
will hold a "Scrapbook Clinic" where she will inspect and discuss sample
scrapbooks brought to the workshop by attendees.
