Humidification

A local historical group with no money wants to flatten newspaper
(1920s) that's never been unfolded.  Does anyone who has practical
experience with newspapers know if it can be humidified in a homemade
humidification chamber (like putting material in plastic trash can
within a larger can with 2-3 inches of water & then putting lid on
larger can)?
