Mini-review:  "Insect Pests in Museums"

"Insect Pests in Museums," David Pinniger, Archetype Publications
(1990), 48 pp. (review copy free to NEDCC on request to Archetype Books,
12-14 Hall Square, Denbigh, Clwyd LL16 3NU, UK; FAX 0745 813484).  Put
out by Institute of Archaeology Publications, this reviews the most
common museum pests (in UK) grouped by food preferences (read potential
collections damage).  While this isn't comprehensive, it is a simple,
readable introduction to the concepts of integrated pest management,
including chemical control.  Sections on management (e.g. how, where,
and what to look for in identifying insect infestation; preventive
strategies; and control options) are particularly good.

Pinniger gives easy step-by-step instructions for prevention and
response to infestation (e.g. "determine most appropriate treatment for
object, pest, and environment; install additional traps; carry out...or
employ a contractor...; record details of treatment; monitor effects...;
record any effects, intended or otherwise").  I'll use this as an
introduction for historic house museums and historical societies.
