Mini-review: "Solving Museum Insect Problems: Chemical Control"

I have just seen Technical Bulletin 15 of the Canadian Conservation
Institute (CCI) ["Solving Museum Insect Problems: Chemical Control,"
John E. Dawson (rev. Thomas J.K. Strang), 1992, French/English dual
language edition, 59 pp.; available from CCI, 1030 Innes Road, Ottawa,
Ontario, Canada K1A 0C8, usually at no charge to non-profit collections
holding institutions].  I recommend it to any institution that routinely
exterminates or has had significant problems with infestation that did
not respond to integrated pest management.  While the referents are
Canadian, it is applicable to libraries and archives in the US.

CCI has done its usual superb job of covering a subject briefly in
non-technical language telling you what you want to know (or need to
know) to evaluate approaches to a preservation problem. The bulletin
recommends extermination for significant infestations or in cases where
IPM alone has proven ineffective

Topics include modes of insecticide activity (on bugs); basic
formulations and application options; safety issues; pest/toxin matches;
properties of common insecticides; useful appendixes and a brief
bibliography.
