Apprenticeship in Conservation Paper Production and Related research

The Samuel H. Kress Foundation has awarded $15,000.00 to the University
of Iowa Center for the Book to help establish a 4 year Conservation
Papermaking Apprenticeship at the Center's Oakdale Paper Facility.
Working under Timothy Barrett, director of the facility, the apprentice
will be trained in the production of Western and Japanese-style
conservation papers and related research techniques.

The apprentice will assist in all aspects of fiber preparation,
sheetforming, drying, finishing and grading, eventually taking full
responsibility for each step in the process. Additional production
duties will include taking part in equipment design, construction and
repair, and cultivation of essential plant material. Research duties
will initially consist of working with the facility director during
ongoing work on the role of gelatin in paper permanence, fermentation of
flax fiber, vegetable lye cooking of Japanese bast fiber, and
development of non-destructive testing techniques for the analysis of
historic papers.  Later the apprentice will plan and undertake his or
her own research projects under the supervision of the director.  The
position is intended for an individual with a strong interest in a
career in conservation paper production and/or related research.  The
salary is $17,000.00; start date September 1st, 1993.
