Spine labels and printer ribbons

UCSD is now producing spine labels on Innopac (an Integrated Library
System) using an Alps Allegro 500 printer. It has a flat printing
surface to prevent labels from getting stuck. Foil back labels are
being used and when necessary, label protectors to ensure adhesion. The
printer ribbon is Alps Allegro 500 Black Cloth. Our concerns are ink
fading/migrating and smearing during application. Is it best to use the
ribbon supplied by the printer manufacturer? Cloth or nylon, does it
matter? We know that labels & inks have been discussed in the past but
would appreciate any current information.
