U.S. Newspaper Program Coordinator.

Visiting Instructor Librarian   $25,000. 12 Month Appointment.

Reports to:  Principal Investigator, US Newspaper Program/ Florida
     (Dolores C. Jenkins, Journalism Librarian, University of Florida)

JOB SUMMARY:  USNP/Florida coordinator for 1993; will distribute surveys
to determine extent of newspapers with Florida imprints; provide
follow-up for non-responses to insure as thorough a coverage as
possible; create an in-house database of the surveys (using Pro-Cite
software, Microsoft Word, etc. on MacIntosh personal computers); will
plan two meetings during the year for the statewide advisory committee
which will examine the results of the surveys and make its
recommendations for the USNP's priorities; will work with the principal
investigator and the rest of the University of Florida USNP staff to
plan and present to the National Endowment for the Humanities grant
proposals for USNP/Florida for the next two to five years.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  supervises one to two student assistants; keeps a log
of the project's activities to provide accountability for the grant;
corresponds with the other statewide USNP committee members; provides
initial contact and follow-up on the surveys; inputs records into the
database or trains the students to do so; makes publicity contacts for
the project; makes other contacts with newspaper-related agencies,
research centers, etc.; visits sites when warranted to collect survey
information; collects information, particularly regarding costs and time
frames, to develop the grant proposals to NEH for the
microfilming/preservation and cataloging phases of the project.  The
coordinator will also perform other duties as may evolve in the course
of the project which have been identified either by the USNP/Florida
staff and committee or by the coordinator herself/himself.

QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:  Bachelor's degree or demonstrated related professional
experience in library science or journalism; working knowledge of
personal computers.
PREFERRED: Master's degree in library science; experience in cataloging
in OCLC environment.

library, and discipline-oriented branches in education,
architecture/fine arts, and music.  Two independent libraries, the Legal
Information Center and the Health Sciences Center Library, add their
bibliographic records to the online catalog, a NOTIS-based integrated
system which currently gives access to more than 1,800,000 bibliographic
records.  The Libraries hold membership in the Research Libraries Group
and maintain an active cataloging program through the SOLINET/OCLC
network.
