Curators and Conservators Discussion Group

    The next meeting of the RBMS Curators and Conservators Discussion
    Group will be on January 24, 1993, at the Executive Tower, Zephyr
    Room (3 blocks west of the Convention Center in Denver, at the
    corner of Curtis and 14th). The topic of discussion will be Special
    Formats (film, microfilm, videodisks, audiodisks, scanners,
    photographs, etc.).  This topic was chosen from the questionnaire
    that I handed out two years ago by participants in the discussion
    group.

    Some of the ideas to be addressed are, who decides what materials in
    libraries get reformatted.  On the basis of what is this decision
    made? What hardware and software--what technologies--are presently
    available?  What is the life expectancy of these technologies?  Are
    there specific technologies best suited for particular materials?
    How should libraries handle/store/ reformat/preserve such items that
    may be donated to them as computer disks, videodisks, recording
    tapes, compact disks, and the like?

    If time allows and the expertise of the participants makes it
    possible, perhaps we can discuss potential sources of funding for
    this kind of work. The idea is not merely to answer the questions
    (some of which may not be answerable), but--just as important--to
    raise the issues for those who will increasingly be dealing with
    these materials in the future.

    Please bring to the discussion any literature you have pertaining to
    current technologies and institutional practices, and funding
    sources.
