    NISO Annual Meeting: Monday, September 23, 1991

    "Controversies of the Information Age--Lessons for Standards Makers"
    is the theme for this year's NISO Annual Meeting, Monday, September
    23, 1991, at the Harvard Club in Boston, Massachusetts. The program
    will look at various challenges facing standards development today:
    the economy, the environment and security. On Sunday afternoon NISO
    has arranged for a special guided tour of Boston, followed by
    "Standards 101," an introductory workshop on standards development
    and NISO in particular. A cash bar reception will follow.

    Linda Garcia (Project Director and Senior Analyst, Office of
    Technology Assessment, U.S. Congress) will keynote, exploring the
    economic justification for standards in terms of today's shift to a
    global economy and the mechanization and networking of technologies.
    Dr. Michael Spring (U. Pittsburgh) will react to Ms. Garcia's
    presentation and project on what we can expect in standards
    development over the next ten years.

    Michael Pekich (Houghton Mifflin) and Jobe B. Morrison (Miami Mill)
    will speak on "Paper Permanence and the Environment," and explore
    the questions of striking a comfortable balance between preserving
    our written heritage and being environmentally responsible.

    Dr. David C. Clark (MIT Laboratory for Computer Science) will
    address the challenges of computer security. Dr. Clark recently
    chaired a study committee of the National Academy of Sciences on
    computer and communication security.

    Registration fee is $100 for NISO members, $150 otherwise. Contact
