Title: Administrative Conservator
Responsibilities:

    The Newberry Library seeks a experienced conservator to perform and
    coordinate conservation treatments in its Conservation Department.
    Conservation staff consists of this position plus 4.5 FTE, in
    addition to the Department Head.  Activities of the Department
    include conservation of bound and flat library and archival
    materials, in-house case binding, box making, contract binding
    preparation, exhibit preparation, and environmental monitoring.

    Specify, document, perform, and evaluate conservation treatments of
    library and archival materials, in cooperation with curators and
    Conservation Dept. staff; perform certain administrative duties
    relating to conservation such as maintenance of equipment and
    inventory and ordering of supplies; participate in organizing
    workflow through the Conservation Dept.; participate in training,
    evaluating, and hiring staff; assist the Preservation Librarian in
    the formulation of treatment standards and institutional
    preservation policies; assist with environmental monitoring; assist
    in exhibit preparation.

    This position reports to the Preservation Librarian.

Qualifications:

    Required:
        at least two years bench experience as a conservator;
        demonstrable mastery of book and/or paper conservation skills;
        knowledge of book structure, conservation theory and technical
        skills; ability and desire to analyze and organize workflow and
        work space;

        ability to work smoothly in cooperation with other
        conservators, technicians, and librarians; ability
        to communicate clearly orally and in writing.

    Desired:
        some previous supervisory or library experience; ability to
        teach and motivate others.

Date available:     Immediately
Salary:             $21,000 - $23,000 depending upon
                    qualifications
