        This workshop will address the challenge of preserving access to
        information and to physical books as it relates to a library's
        mission and its goals and objectives, as reflected in its
        collection management and development policy.  The workshop will
        discuss in considerable depth organizational, management and
        collecting issues in various types of libraries, and will
        involve close physical review of a wide range of library
        materials (book format primarily) to illustrate the principles
        and the process.

    The Care and Repair of Deteriorating Library Collections

        This workshop will equip participants with the ability to make
        informed decisions about the proper repair procedures for
        individual items in their collections and to acquaint them with
        proper archival procedures that they can perform in house.  The
        focus will be on paper-based materials in both general and
        special collections.

    Choosing Appropriate Library Binding Methods and Materials

        Dates & Times:      Aug. 14-16, 1991

        Participants will learn how to choose appropriate binding
        methods of different types of materials; write a binding
        contract; select an appropriate binder; prepare materials for a
        commercial binder; and perform certain binding methods in house.

    Strategies for Library Disaster Preparedness and Recovery

         This workshop will teach participants why it is important to be
        prepared for a library disaster; proper procedures for mopping
        up a disaster;  write a disaster plan that is systematic and
        logical for a particular institution; and to recommend
        environments conducive to lessening the vulnerability of library
        collections. Participants will have the knowledge and ability to
        develop an adequate disaster plan; to activate that plan; to
        understand the value of prevention; and to know what to do in
        the case of mold and insect damage.
