Email gateway to ALANET

From: Walter Henry <whenry>
Date: Sunday, March 10, 1991
There is now a gateway that allows transfer of electronic mail to and
from ALANET, an email service operated by ALA. ALANET is one of several
commercial email services that make up Dialcom, a commercial venture
owned and operated by British Telecom. The CMR (Commercial Mail Relay)
gateway is run by ISI (USC/Information Sciences Institute). Those of
you who have been around a while may remember that there used to be a
CMR gateway to Dialcom (and hence ALANET) run by ISI under NSF
sponsorship, but it disappeared a while back when NSF pulled the
funding.

Complete instructions for using the gateway are appended below, but for
those of us on the Internet (or Bitnet) side sending mail TO folks on
ALANET is simple: just mail to ALA1234%ALANET [at] INTERMAIL__ISI__EDU (for
ALA1234, substitute the user's actual mailbox). If you have trouble,
let me know and I'll work with you.

Now that this big user-base is reachable, if any of you know of
conservation/preservation people who have ALANET accounts but not
Internet/Bitnet accounts, please let me know and I will get in touch
with them and try to drag them aboard.

The following is an extract from the file by Westine, Ward, Refuerzo and
Tanner, CMR.INF, an updated version of which is available via the
FileList. Send requests to <whenry [at] lindy__stanford__edu>
