Conservation Technician position

The Preservation Department, Shields Library, University of California,
Davis, has a half-time (20 hours per week, hours flexible) position for
a Conservation Assistant (Library Asst. I, $754-$875 per month) for the
general collection.  The job involves routine mending and book repair,
including rebacking, paper repair, tightening-in, hinge repair, tip-ins
and construction of protective enclosures, including phase boxes.  Under
supervision, more complicated repairs such as construction of hollow
tubular backs and new cases, preparation for new cases and resewing will
be done.  The job also involves assisting in assessing appropriate
treatment and maintaining location control of materials in the section.

Requirements include aptitude for detailed handwork and knowledge of
basic conservation principles.  Experience in book repair/binding
preferred.  UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS include a typing test, Minnesota
clerical test and a supplemental clerical application.  The UC Davis
Employment Office is open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Address

clerical tests are administered by appointment only at the campus
Employment Office and must be taken on or before noon of the final
filing date.  Applicants who have not taken the required tests can not
