Subject: AIC update session
To those on the DistList who are AIC Book and Paper Group members (and others who have 2 cents to put in): The 1991 AIC Conference will feature an update session from the Book and Paper Group. One section of the update will address "Philosophical Considerations in Reformatting for Libraries and Archives". As the co- ordinator of this section, it is my job to get input from the membership and then distill it all down into a 15-minute presentation. There have certainly been developments and changes in attitude toward reformatting during the last four years. At both the AIC and ALA conferences there have been opinions expressed that the brittle book problem has been overstated and that too much money is being put into microfilming programs, at the expense of other preservation options. Preservation photocopy has also become more available. Please send me your thoughts on these and related issues, so that I can include them in the update. If you would rather talk on the phone, you can reach me at (302)888-4633 -- or contact me via email and I can call you, if that's better. Thanks for your help in putting this together.
