                  INVITATION TO THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED
ACADEMIC SOCIETY ON JAPANESE SOCIETY OF PICTORIAL SCIENCE

A newly established academic society, The Japanese Society of
Pictorial Science (JSPS) has three main objectives on its
developments in the area of psychology,

    1) to develop the library system for collecting and distributing
the audio-visual scientific materials and application software
which should be a permanent resource for scientific activities,

    2) to conserve the experimental apparatus, instruments, historically
important documentation, and so on, which used to be quite
important in our laboratory in a form of VTR or motion picture
and any other picture retrieval system, such as digital image
       database, and

    3) to publish the scientific newsletter which describes on the
audio-visual materials, application software to generate the
images on CRT display, and distribute the information for newly
       registered materials in this library.

A large quantity of the audio-visual materials, application
software, historically important instruments are now preserved at
the many institutions individually. On the other hand they are now
being lost and destroyed for various reasons. We have a
responsibility to preserve them, to make systematic organization for
their usage, and to pass them on to the next generation.
