have you seen fahrenheit 451? in that, there is a
community of poeple, each one learns one book by
heart. he will teach it to another.

it is a surprisingly reliable way of transmission,
provided it is taken seriously. they did that with the
vedas, and even figured out error correction systems
to prevent corruption of (sacred) texts.

but as you say, the issue is
density/longevity/readability.
