after all the arguments are over, it really does not
matter if dat tapes last five years longer than a cdr.
you can make a bit perfect copy of a cdr in under
eight minutes. an equivalent dat tape will take 90
minutes.

ease of migration is the real issue. we really do not
have reliable enough information about actual physical
longevity of either medium. metal powder tapes have
been around for less than ten years, so what do we
know about their long term stability. (i prefer rust
to something that can rust.)
