RE: [AV Media Matters] Analogue vs digital tape stock

Jeff

Hard drives may be the answer for audio.

I just bought a Castlewood ORB for $200 and $28 for a 2.2 GigaByte disk.
The
local Community College uses ORBs and they hold up to student abuse. The
Iomega Jazz drives did not hold up. There were many cases where students
could not recover their files on the Jazz. As with other media, the design
of the hardware and software are critical.

The video head on hard drives is almost in contact with the disk--sort of
like a 747 flying ten feet off the ground. Head crashes are a possibility.
The design of the head assembly and the disk surface finish are both
critical.

Is anyone aware of a "Consumer Reports" evaluation of the durability of Hard
Drives?
