Just a quick note to thank all of you who have suggested means of solving
my little problem.

I'm going the cold route first, on the basis that it is potentially less
harmful to the vinyl.  If that fails, it's out with the blowtorch!!

I'll post a follow-up for the record - just in case anyone else gets a
similar problem at some time.
