Isn't the M format the VHS sized electronic news tape that Ampex sold as 289,
and later made as an ADAT tape called 489 at first?

The cassette and tape are compatible with VHS and SVHS drives.
In electronic news use, I believe the standard length ran only 20 min. vs. 120
max for consumer VHS.

Or am I misremembering off the top of my head?

Ampex, now Quantegy  does have a nice media chart booklet of video tape types,
I will dig that out of my files if this is not confirmed as being the
information the questor needed.
