There are utilities out there that allow some DDS drives to transfer audio.

dattract for mac - http://pdicamillo.org/~peter/datxtract/

vdat is for pc - http://homepages.compuserve.de/eungemach/main.html

They extract audio as file information, so the SPDIF/audio monitoring question would be moot.



My now dated experience recalls that audio DATs don't play in DATA drives. But that is over ten year old information...
