Re: [ARSCLIST] Software for Mac

Hi Craig,

That's interesting that your system folks are reporting failures due to dual booting. I haven't experienced such problems with the computers I have set up to dual boot, nor heard of complaints from others.

Anyway, it probably is easier to run Mac native software. You can use one of the Mac software update sites (www.macupdate.com or www.versiontracker.com) and search for audio editor to pull up a bunch of options. Also a site like www.kvraudio.com provides a fairly extensive list of commercial and freeware plugins and hosts.

Since you work with both Sound Forge and WaveLab, you must be comfortable switching between the strengths and weaknesses of the different interfaces. If you identify a Mac audio editor you like but can't find an efficient solution for a particular workflow problem, you might try posting to the company's forum for advice and/or ARSCLIST before giving up on the program. It can be troubling how standard record/editing operations in one program can seem like drudgery in another, but often modifying workflow habits can ease the pain.

Hey Peter,

According to the systems folks I've talked to here at UGA, Boot Camp
has caused some pretty severe failures over time due to dual booting.
This has been their experience, not mine, and I don't think they were
booting off a separate drive; anyway, the suggestion that it could be
problematic has given me pause when thinking about my options. It's
becoming clearer to me, though, as I read all the very helpful
responses I've gotten, that using either Boot Camp or Parallels is
probably not my best choice, that I should be thinking more towards
software made for Mac or going to an external flash recorder.

Parallels, like VMWare Fusion, is a virtual machine that runs a layer of software between your operating system and the hardware. This allows you to "share" hardware between two or more guest operating systems. BootCamp on the other hand allows you to run Windows directly on Apple hardware. Although running Parallels might work fine for your needs, I don't understand why Boot Camp should be discounted.
