Research Associate (Project Audio Engineer), Tenure-Ineligible, Limited Term
Appointment Effective Beginning October 1, 2008

The Indiana University Archives of Traditional Music (ATM) seeks candidates for the position of Research Associate (Project Audio Engineer), a tenure-ineligible appointment for the period 10/1/08 to 5/31/09 with the possibility of renewal. The Engineer will work on the project entitled, "Sound Directions: Digital Preservation and Access for Global Audio Heritage," which is funded by Indiana University and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Project Engineer will be responsible for the preservation transfer of analog tape and disc field recordings to digital files using established international standards and best practices. This includes physical restoration of deteriorating recordings (cleaning, baking, etc), quality control procedures, alignment/calibration of playback machines, and verification of signal chain performance. The Engineer is responsible for collecting extensive documentation of both the source recordings and the transfer process using custom software developed by the project. This position will participate in research and development related to workflow, development of audio preservation software, and establishing audio preservation procedures for other campus units. The Project Engineer supervises an assistant engineer and also serves on the team that assesses preservation needs of project collections.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in audio production or related field, or equivalent work experience in an audio studio or audio archive. Strongly preferred  is experience in: a) audio archiving, working with analog tape, analog tape machines, field disc recordings, turntables and analog to digital conversion, b) use of audio capture, editing and signal processing software; c) operation and maintenance of analog playback equipment; d) documenting audio projects in detail; f) troubleshooting of Windows-based desktop computers.

SALARY AND RANK: Research Associate.  Annual Salary $45,320

The Project Assistant will work on the project entitled, "Sound Directions: Digital Preservation and Access for Global Audio Heritage," funded by Indiana University and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Project Assistant will be responsible for managing workflow in and out of the preservation studio, working with collection documentation, marking divisions of content in files, collecting appropriate metadata, and constructing ATM indexes. The Project Assistant also has responsibility for quality control of preservation products and creating derivative files. The Project Assistant will serve on the team that assesses preservation needs of project collections. This position will also manage communication with both software development test sites and communities to which materials will be repatriated around the world.

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate work required with a degree in Library Science, Ethnomusicology or related discipline preferred. Strongly preferred is: a) experience working in an archival setting; b) familiarity with ethnographic fieldwork, world music traditions and historical recorded sound formats; c) experience working on projects that require extensive documentation and meticulous attention to detail.

SALARY AND RANK: Research Associate.  Annual Salary $31,930.
