Re: [ARSCLIST] : leeds music, and early MCA

I have done a little research. From what I have found out, Leeds Music was formed in 1939, and Lou Levy, the man who formed it, would only have been 12 years old in 1923/24 when the song was written. According to the smallprint on the actual sheet music, the song was copyrighted under MCA in 1923, 1929 and 1950, all before Leeds Music became part of MCA. MCA was formed in 1924, but was only a talent booking agency at this time and not a publisher. I presume that teh song was registered with a different company, one that was bought by MCA maybe and therefore MCA gained the copyrights. I am trying to find out what this company would have been, or what would have happened, but this part is proving very difficult.

There are one or two very good books that are out there on the history of music publishing in America, from the 1880s on.The ones I know of were all published in the 70s,and 80s,and are long out of print. The titles escape me now.

Thanks Roger, that is great.

Do you know where I can find out more about this Leeds Music? I did a Google
search and there is virtually nothing on the net.

Thanks, Jamie

Some accounts say 1923
http://timelines.ws/20thcent/1922_1923.HTML ,others say 1924.But MCA started
as a talent/booking agency."Nobody Know's You (When You're Down And Out)",
was published by Leeds Music.Leeds was acquired by MCA in 1962.

I have a query regarding MCA music publishing incorporation, now UMG. I am
researching into the song 'Nobody Know's You (When You're Down And Out)',
which was registered with MCA in 1923. However, as far as I can tell, MCA's
history does not stretch back this far. I would like to find out how the
song came to MCA, and perhaps what company, if not MCA, it was registered
with before. Does anybody have any idea this?

Thanks, Jamie
