Onceuponatime I shopped (and later worked at) the Merit Music Shop in NYCity.
They sold out-of-catalogue records. An employee I knew only as George was
bemused by my requests for black seal Victors from the 20s and earlier. I
recall that he had an accent of European origin I couldn't quite place. More
than once he followed me into a listening booth to hear what I was buying. He
could never make it through an entire side; he always left, looking unhapppy.

After a while he left and went somewhere else.

When George Jellinek retired a few years back I read an article about his
career and it mentioned that he had worked at Merit, long ago, and I realized
that the George I remembered was Jellinek.
