Re: [ARSCLIST] Collection for sale

I look at general record listings, with no particular wanted item in mind. It's amazing what you can find that way.I have had very few people overgrade records, but it does happen.and when it does,it is usually on a record I have spent only a few bucks on. If an item has lots of bids,I steer clear of it.If,however, something I really want, has only a few bids, and is under $50,I will try to bid on it. I have won a couple of high three figure records, like this at the very end, usually by placing a bid of about $100.00 on said record at the very end,and getting it for like $75 or $80.I love eBay,it has made the choice rarities all that more affordable,if you are willing to put some time into it.And if you see something you'd want,as I did today, with the first Telegraph Avenue Lp,that was only in so-so shape, you can pass on it,knowing in six month to a years time a better copy will come up.This could not be done in the era before eBay.

reputable sellers is not reliable. I like my vinyl very clear or it's not worth it to me. I'm not
one of these "digital is the devil" people, I like CD's just fine. The only reason I usually buy
vinyl is if it was never put out on CD (more common than you'd think) or if the CD remastering is
awful (more common than you'd hope). And, because of high postage costs, eBay is usually not a good
source for albums you want for the cover art. So I use it sparingly but I've found some great deals
there.

Here's a typical ebay case. There was a classical record I want, not the most common thing but not
the rarest by a long shot. It was never issued on CD. There was one rated "NM+" for both cover and
vinyl on eBay from a guy with thousands of sales and a 100% rating.. So I put what I considered a
reasonable bid and then got sniped at the end because it sold for 3x my bid. Then I was headed to
the vicinity of one of my favorite vinyl shops so I called the guy and mentioned that record. He
said, "oh I have one still shrink-wrapped here. Hasn't sold in years and you can have it for $10."
He's the kind of guy that even if he knew the eBay value, he makes plenty of dough on the "special
collection" cardboard boxes of overpriced MoFi reissues and the like (not that MoFi's are bad, just
that they're overpriced on the used market) so he'd sell it for maybe 2x his cost to a loyal
customer. I'm glad I bought it cheap because the pressing is not great even if the music is.
