"Slug" probably goes back to the days of hot type. The "slug" was a line of type across the top of a galley proof with a very short (one or two words usually) description of the story.

Funny how terms can be localized..putting a voice ID on a tape
before beginning the program, you could "slate" it or "slug" it.
You're right - "slug" is a new one on me.  Obviously, "slate"
comes from motion picture parlance.  What's the etymology
of "slug"?
