Oh, and don't forget a few "popular" music writers of their day, like Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Brahms, Verdi, etc., ad infinitum!  They, fortunately for us, wrote the popular music of their day.  And Ezio Pinza did rather well in what we would call today
"both genres."
