Vacancy for an Audio Engineer, Grade C, British Library Sound Archive

The British Library requires an audio engineer to begin work immediately in the Sound Archive Technical Services section, based at the Library's flagship building in London. The successful candidate will have a passion for sound recordings in all forms, from the earliest wax cylinders to mp3 files and beyond, and will play a key rôle in a variety of technical operations in the British Library Sound Archive. This is a part-time position, 20.5 hours per week and a fixed term appointment ending at the end of April 2010.

 

The main duties are to:

 

* transfer and digitise recordings to archival standards

* transferring and compiling recordings for British Library audio publications, lectures, seminars, exhibitions and web site

* make playback copies for the Sound Archive's Listening and Viewing service including up-loading files to the SoundServer audio store

* manage the Sound Archive's digital audio files on internal networked stores

* make copies of collection items for Transcription Service customers and liaising with the customer and British Library Finance for payment

* create new data records for transferred items on CADENSA, the Sound Archive's catalogue

* advise colleagues and partner organisations on technical matters

 

 

Applicants must have:

 

* a thorough understanding and familiarity with the processes of audio and video recording, transfer and playback technologies with demonstrable experience of professional audio archival work and a particular knowledge of obsolete carriers such as wax cylinders and coarsegroove discs

* experience and familiarity with SADiE digital audio workstations or comparable audio editing software and hardware

* a high level of computer literacy in standard office software and web awareness along with a demonstrable and proven experience  in quickly learning new computer software

* an enthusiasm for working in an area adapting to frequent change in technology and working methodology

* clear and effective communication across a range of issues

* good interpersonal skills

* the ability to work as part of a team but without continuous supervision

* a meticulous approach to work

* the ability to judge the quality of audio recordings by listening

 

 

Additional requirements (desirable)

* location recording experience using portable digital recorders

* recording studio experience, particularly speech recording and voice overs

Salary (grade C):  £21,058-£23,618 pro rata (pay award pending)
