Re: [ARSCLIST] Murcury Living Presence LP EQ
Perhaps he got better. I'm not as close to much of his repertory as with
some other music.
In Kubelik's case, he recorded the Janacek Sinfonietta numerous times. I
also heard him do it live. His first LP (the 78 set wasn't in good enough
sound to make the same impact) which came out here on a 10" 2 sided London,
was magnificent- still my favorite, with a suitably abrasive edge to the
brass playing. Each successive recording became tamer and slacker. The
live one was brash but tentative in places. Still, it was thrilling to hear
it in truly living stereo.
The issue of subsequent versions by a given performer and readings by others
show growth, maturity, hardening of the arteries- a wide variety of
variations which is why this collector has so many versions of the same
piece. And more in the head. Every performance I hear of works with which
I have some familiarity is tracked by the others in my mental music locker.
Incidentally, didn't the Mercury 40,000s also come in the 10,000 series?

They definitely are. Fennell was on his game every day of every Mercury
session.
What would make you think they wouldn't be? The EWE actually got better as
Fennell's tenure went along.

Assuming the performances are equally good.

Hi Sammy:
Mercury used AES EQ until 1954 when everyone standardized on the RIAA
curve. The AES curve is very close to RIAA and I doubt most people could
hear the difference. You could tweak the treble EQ to suit your hearing.
There's not much information above 12K on those old LPs anyway.
Fennell went back and recorded some or all of this in stereo, and the CD
is still in print:

I will guarantee you it will sound much better than an early 1950's LP.

Thanks to all who have helped with my questions on Scotch audio tape.
Does anybody have EQ data for pre-stereo Mercury Living Presence LPs?
The
LP in question is MG40007, Fred Fennell conducting the Eastman Wind
Ensemble, Marches by Sousa and Others.
Thanks for your help!
