Re: [ARSCLIST] Soviet Recordings

Hi Roger:

That photo was first used in the book/CD set "You Are There" in the mid-90's. It was taken by Harold Lawrence. That CD/book, by the way, is the official history of Mercury Living Presence, and a very nice full-length CD with selections from many of the releases up to that point. The other good source if you want truth vs. a flood of printed myths and rumors is Michael Gray's series of articles for The Absolute Sound in the early 90's. And of course the "About This Recording" text on the back of almost all of the record sleeves.

Speakers Corner did a nice job on that LP box set. The booklet contains nice expanded recollections and facts about the trip. It was a big deal in 1962. Several NY Times articles and a CBS News TV story from Moscow.

Hey Tom,

I know you were omly, like twelve at the time, but did you go along ?

That photo on the Speakers Corners box is a classic ! Mercury should have used it on a record cover themselves !

Don't forget the 1962 Mercury trip to the U.S.S.R. LPs were released in USA and Europe but not sure
if they were ever issued in USSR. Recordings included the OSIPOV STATE RUSSIAN FOLK ORCHESTRA:

And the Borodin String Quartet (LP reissued recently by Speakers Corner).

Not sure if these encompass the original info-search, sorry in advance if they don't.
