Would anyone out there be able to give me an idea about fees charged for
broadcasting rights on a national level? We charge fees for our video on
three different levels: for personal use only, for local media, and for
national media but now what we are facing is the national level company
wants to use some of our video (only 35 seconds) on their project and sell
that project as a DVD after it airs. What additional should we charge him
for this? And while you are at it could you give me an idea what you charge
for the rights for video usage? Thanks.

I am happy to provide information on this on any level and you can call me
as well 831-425-2527. I have years of experience in this and my newest
experience involves my feature documentary, Sputnik Mania, where I had to deal with
dozens of rights holders to obtain rights. Shocking as it may seem, rights
charges range from $50 a second to $300 a second for national broadcast
rights and DVD rights. While this may seem exorbitantly high, the industry is
moving in this direction and even "rights free music" now costs thousands of
dollars per minute. Do not undersell what you in your archive. The fact is,
the networks are very quick to argue that you should not charge high fees but
will charge you fees like I mentioned when you are making something and using
their material.
