There were several factors in addition to inflation.

First off, at around the same time songwriters got a substantial royalty
increase after having been saddled with a statutory two cents a copy rate
since the days of player pianos. Second, record stores decided that they
were no longer going to discount CDs as they had vinyl. Record labels got
around a three dollar a copy increase but had to eat another dollar or so in
royalty payments. Meanwhile record stores enjoyed a 12 to 14 dollar per unit
increase and soon stopped stocking vinyl.
