I was not aware that DDS drives could accurately transfer DAT tapes but I
have a question: does the data remain in the 12-bit nonlinear/32kHz format
after transfer and if so, how do you play it back? Is this format supported
by any current soundcard/software combinations? I also recall (it's been a
long time) many of these old DAT machines used preemphasis, how do you deal
with this?

What software do you use for extraction? To be perfectly honest, digital
audio extraction is not a simple task whether from tape or optical disc so I
would have a hard time trusting freeware.
