If you mean the triangular chrome-colored Ampex-badged mics, those were actually Electrovoice,
forgot the EV model number. They were P.A.-grade mics, dynamics. Like several EV models of the time,
they had a 4-pin screw-in connector that could be wired for hi-z unbalanced 2-wire or low-z balanced
3-wire. If you're talking about the Ampex-badged little plastic mics about the size of a large
cigar, those were generic Japanese dynamics and were sold with the solid-state Ampex reel decks of
the late 60's. Those mics actually are surprisingly good interview mics and I use them often with my
little cassette recorder and get very nice audible human voice pickup. Ampex also re-badged the
Altec cardioid and omni dynamic mics of the late 60's and sold them as accessories to broadcasters
buying the AG-600 and AG-500 tape decks. Those Altec mics, especially the omni, were actually quite
hi-fi as far as having pretty even response and wide frequency range and decent sensitivity. Nothing
like a Schoeps small-capsule or an Altec "lipstick" mic, but pretty darn good.
I would guess, as far as stage cool and general availability, you probably used the chrome-colored
EV mics?

The last mike I owned with a
proper sound apparently came with an Ampex tape recorder, probably in
the mid-fifties?! The problem is, today, that even the worst and cheapest
mikes are too durn GOOD for my taste!
