Re: [ARSCLIST] Harry Carney - La Plus Belle Africaine

This is a great list of Carney, but I'm surprised not to see La Plus Belle Africaine on it, as there are several nice recordings. My favorite of all Carney recordings though is the version of La Plus Belle Africaine from Winnepeg, May 25, 1973, which was released on LP for Ellington '87 (split - one side each - with a July 18, '56 Stratford set on the other side) - one of my favorite of all recordings, right up there with Coltrane, Dolphy, Garvin Bushell & company at the Village Vanguard in Nov. '61 and Duke's Queen's Suite. Carney sounds like a man on fire, and as if he wanted to make sure that everything he had to say was contained in this one solo because he might not get the chance again to say it- and how close he was - 18 months or so later, he would be gone.

Liner notes for the Ellington '87 LP were contributed by Andrew Homzy, so maybe he can contribute more about this great recording.

I think it is "Pyramid" with Carney all the way. Also he took some extensive
solo on BG Carnegie Hall 1938. Concert (please, look at the full, unedited
version of that concert, issued few years ago.
