A performer sells record labels, broadcasters and concert promoters access to their fans. They in turn sell the audience tickets and records while broadcasters sell access to the same audience to advertisers.

The audience is what's for sale. An artist who has no audience doesn't get booked, doesn't get a recording contract and doesn't get airplay.

The artist's job is aggregating an audience. Some are more skilled at doing this than others. Occasionally somebody is exceptionally skilled at both building audiences and performing music. Most people are considerably more skilled at one than the other.
