iPod 'oldies' break the classical mouldBy Dalya Alberge, Arts Correspondent
NI_MPU('middle'); FANS of classical music, belying their fuddy-duddy, traditionalist image, are embracing new technology as never before. Three quarters of them use the most advanced media ? PCs, digital radio, radio via the internet, digital television and MP3 players ? and more than half have ?ripped?, or converted to digital format, at least some of their classical CD collection. The findings emerged from a survey of more than 60,000 classical music buyers, which was commissioned by Gramophone magazine to mark the Classic FM Gramophone Awards 2006 yesterday, at which Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic won Record of the Year. The survey also indicated that one in five listeners downloads classical music legally from the internet and prefers to listen to classical music on an MP3 or other digital player. The average number of classical downloads over the past year was 12; comparable to the average 12.7 CDs purchased. There
is no divide across age groups. Downloaders aged over 50 are in tune with younger classical music fans, buying 11.5 downloads on average. James Jolly, the Gramophone editor-in-chief, said: ?These findings overturn our preconceptions about the kind of person who buys and listens to classical music. All ages actively enjoy classical music.? Surprised to find that the over-50s were so ?technologically adept?, he said: ?We see a whole new group of mature MP3 listeners ? iPod oldies, perhaps ? emerging who are far from old in their outlook.? Respondents were also asked to suggest a theme tune for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Nearly half said that a British piece would be most appropriate, while a third would prefer a piece by a foreign composer. Sir Edward Elgar was the most popular choice of composer, named by 13 per cent. More than one respondent joked about a death march or requiem being more appropriate. One person said: ?If it ends up like Wembley Stadium, I
suggest the Unfinished Symphony.? Mr Jolly said: ?The single most popular choice for a theme for the 2012 Olympics was a specially commissioned composition, with several people suggesting that it should be a national competition submitted to a public vote. ?That would be the most democratic way of selecting a tune . . . And Britain might discover a major new composer.?
