[ARSCLIST] Naxos (was Re: [ARSCLIST] CD versus Download was "All hail the analogue revolution...")

Also, looking at their website ... who are these artists? If you enjoy it, great, but I highly doubt these products or artists have very large audiences. Hence -- NICHE business.

Most of the 'name' artists are signed up with other companies. That's not a problem for Naxos. They have some major names either who stay with them or who get to do what they want - a luxury the majors do not afford them.

However, they do not attempt to compete on that basis. They provide sound performances in excellent sonics at a bargain price. They're not alone in that, of course. They fill many niches with material that is proving both popular and profitable. But if the Cleveland Orchestra cannot find a major publisher for their work, Naxos is not ready to compete. It's a different philosophy.

The orchestras they use will never have the cachet of the BSO. Their singers are not competitors of Pavarotti. Midori is not signed with Naxos. But they deliver product the public likes and which seems to many to satisfy the composers' dictates.
