Well, first this depends on WHICH copyright(s)! The artist certainly owns
the
composer copyright (IF it was their composition and not a cover tune)...may,
or more likely may NOT own the publisher copyright...and only owns the sound
recording copyright if either he has a REALLY clever lawyer, or set up a
record company and did the recording!

And many artists are so anxious to become stars (they think) that they'll
give the "Amalgamated Multinational Record Co., Unltd" whatever they
ask for...
