Georg Solti's recording of Wagner's Ring is appropriately a reference point for such adventures. John Culshaw's engineering exploited devices for stereo 'realism' which did not work in monaural. As a result, the stereo and mono mixes differed substantially.

Some years ago, there was a CD-ROM release of the Ring which used the Solti recording in a compressed monaural format. You guessed it: they used the stereo recording and summed the channels.
